Make a cute little String Star quilt, about 33" x 33" before borders, in this 6-hour hands on workshop.

Learn about "pull" fabrics, strip-piecing, "tube" construction, and lots more as you machine-piece your way to the stars, er…star. This is a real stash-buster quilt and can be made totally scrappy happy, or with a controlled palate. The choice is yours. Border options will be discusses, but you'll add those at home.

Skill Level: Beginning, Intermediate
(Accurate cutting and piecing skills are presumed.)

Duration: 6 hours

Supply List
  • Between 24 and 42 different fabrics, coordinated or not. Pieces should be at least 20.5" long and 7" wide. Fat Quarters will work as long as they're long enough. Measure.
  • 3/4 yard "Set Fabric" (Should contrast with fabrics above.)
  • About 1/2 yard "Set Fabric" for borders; 1 yard, if borders are wide.
  • 1 yard backing fabric
  • Batting
  • Scraps and leftovers for binding
Tools
  • Sewing machine you know how to operate.
Straight stitching only; scant quarter inch seams.
(Clean out the crud. Put in a new needle.)

  • 6" x 12" rotary ruler with TWO 45° lines.
  • 6" x 24" rotary ruler if cutting Fat Quarters.
  • Rotary mat with lines.
  • Rotary cutter with sharp blade.
  • Quarter inch foot, or move the needle.
  • Neutral colored thread for piecing, preferably 50 weight.
(Thinner thread DOES make a difference! I like Aurifil.)
  • Small scissors to chop fabric strips in half and to cut threads.
Over-achievers may begin the cutting process at home ONLY if they can cut perfect strips, not zigzags. (Bring all leftover fabric to class.) Divide fabrics into three piles with the same number of fabrics in each: Favorite, Next Favorite, Least Favorite. Fold fabric selvage to selvage. Cut ONE strip from each fabric. Cut the fabrics in the first pile (Favorite) 2" wide. Cut fabrics in the second pile (Next Favorite) 1½" wide. Cut fabrics in the third pile (Least Favorite) 1" wide.

"Yours was the first on-line class I have taken so I can't compare it to anything else. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and think that the daily instructional segments contained the right amount for us to do. If you had to skip a day for some reason, it was easy enough to catch up. I certainly appreciated your posting the new lesson each day at 1 a.m....I spend a fair amount of time on the computer i the middle of the night so it worked out very well for me. You certainly responded to my emails promptly so I would rate your "accessibility as excellent. I will share what I have done with my guild members and recommend your onlne classes to them."
